Relay for Life

This month we’re going to head in a completely different direction and talk about people. Blairstown Animal Hospital has a team for the Relay for Life this year, being held at North Warren Regional School right here in Blairstown.Relay_logo

Relay for Life is a fundraising and awareness event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Relays occur not only all over the United States but in other countries as well. The premise is that cancer never sleeps, thus the events run up to twenty-four hours continuously. Teams run or walk a track and have to keep at least one member on the path at all times. They raise money through sponsorships and fundraisers during the preceding months which is donated to the cause. This is more than just a fundraising event, however. The inaugural lap is taken by cancer survivors to celebrate their fight and to remember those who have lost the battle. As darkness descends, luminaria are lit, each bearing the name of a friend or a family member affected by cancer.
BakeSale_smTeam Captain, Dr. Carol Clegg, has been involved in Relay for Life since 2002, after her sister was diagnosed with lymphoma. The following year, her father faced multiple myeloma and she continued the relay for both of them. This year, she decided to put together her own team of coworkers. We have had several fundraisers including nail-clipping clinics and bake sales and we are selling “Happy Dog Meals” — boxes of fun treats generously donated by Annie’s Pooch Pops. You can also “buy a bone” at the clinic that we will hang up with your name and a special message if you would like.

We would love to have your support, either by participating in one of our fundraisers or by donating directly to our team, the BAH Cancer Dawgs. To do that, just go to and click on the donation box. You’ll be able to select our team from there.

If you are interested in participating in the relay, information is also available on the website. There will be games and fundraisers at the relay and the teams would all appreciate community support. If you are a cancer survivor and would like to walk the opening lap, also check out the website for more information.

We hope to see you June 9-10 or at any of our fundraisers!
