Relay for Life

Blairstown Animal Hospital is proud to have a Relay for Life team for a second year. This year’s team, the BAH Warriors, is again being led by Dr. Carol Clegg. This will mark her twelfth Relay for Life. Dr. Clegg’s sister and father are both cancer survivors, thus sparking her interest in the event.

Relay for Life is a fundraising and awareness event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Relays occur not only all over the United States but in other countries as well. The premise is that cancer never sleeps, thus the events run up to twenty-four hours continuously. Teams run or walk a track and have to keep at least one member on the path at all times. The track is lined with luminarias decorated in honor of friends and family members who have succumbed to cancer. Money is raised through sponsorships and fundraisers during the preceding months and is donated to the cause. This is more than just a fundraising event, however. The inaugural lap is taken by cancer survivors to celebrate their fight and to remember those who have lost the battle.
Relay_logoThere are many ways you can help us with this cause. You can donate directly to our team or a member of the team. Log on to relayforlife.org and search BAH Warriors or an individual’s name to make an online donation. On May 10th, there is a Tricky Tray at the Shawnee Inn starting at 6:00 pm. There will be tons of baskets to win, including one with a Blairstown Animal Hospital gift certificate, and a basket full of Annie’s Pooch Pops. We also have a display of Annie’s Pooch Pops in our waiting room with all proceeds going to the Relay. On May 19th from 12-3 pm, bring your pet, muddy paws and all, to our BAH Warriors Dog Wash at the hospital (and buy some treats for humans and pets while you are there).

The Relay itself is at North Warren Regional June 8-9. Our team will be circling the field all night long with hundreds of others, dancing to the tunes from the DJs, and having fun with the various games and contests. We encourage you to come out and support our team or join a team of your own.

One more date to keep in mind is September 22nd, the Bark for Life Relay. It is for the canine companions of cancer survivors, caretakers, and anyone whose life has been affected by cancer, and their dogs. Blairstown Animal Hospital is the proud primary sponsor of this event which will be held at the Tunnel Field in Knowlton.

To keep up on these events and see what has been going on at the hospital, check out our Facebook page. And thank you for your support!

Update: Thank you to all who supported our team! The Blairstown Animal Hospital Relay for Life team raised $2686 for the American Cancer Society, surpassing their goal of $2000 and earning the ACS’s bronze team status. A special “shout out” to Karen Hinchy, for her generous donation at our dog wash fundraiser.

We will be hosting a “BARK for Life” relay on September 22, 2013, at the Tunnel Field in Knowlton. This is a canine relay affliated with the ACS, meant to honor the dogs as cancer survivors and caregivers to cancer patients, again in an effort to raise funds for ACS. Any dog owner can register their dog by going online to the North Warren BARK relay for life webpage, or stop in our office for forms. There is a $10 registration fee and dog teams are encouraged to raise money. There will also be costume contests and games to compete for. Please check back for more information as it becomes available.
